The Green Card
Your motor insurance covers you within the EU/EEA. However, in some countries you are still required to carry a Green Card. Here you can find out when you need it and how to obtain it.
Driving in the EU/EEA and selected countries
You do not need to carry the Green Card when driving in EU/EEA countries or in Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and the United Kingdom.
Countries where you must carry a Green Card
The Green Card is still required in some countries outside the EU/EEA:

The Green Card – paper or PDF
Insurance companies can choose whether to provide the Green Card as a printed document or send a file that you can print yourself.
From 1 January 2025, insurance companies can also issue the Green Card as a PDF file. The PDF version is a fully valid document that can be shown to authorities on a mobile phone, tablet or other digital device.
This makes it easier to carry the necessary documentation when travelling abroad without needing a physical copy.
Countries outside the scheme
Kosovo – The Green Card is not accepted. You must purchase frontier insurance at the border.
Russia and Belarus – Suspended as of 1 June 2023. The Green Card is not valid; you must purchase frontier insurance when entering the country.
Iran – Suspended as of 1 January 2024. The Green Card is not valid; you must purchase frontier insurance when entering the country.
