How to become a member of DFIM - foreign insurance companies

This guide only applies to foreign insurance companies wishing to provide motor third-party liability insurance for vehicles subject to registration in Denmark.

Use and purpose

This guide only applies to foreign insurance companies wishing to provide motor third-party liability insurance for vehicles subject to registration in Denmark. Guidance on which vehicles are subject to registration can be found here: Skat.dk.

Insurance companies providing statutory liability insurance for motor vehicles in Denmark are required by law to become members of DFIM.

This guide provides information about the process and requirements for becoming a member of DFIM. Especially in the interaction between the Danish FSA, the Danish Motor Agency and DFIM several elements of the admission process are interdependent, and DFIM is therefore in continuous dialogue with both the Danish FSA and the Danish Motor Agency.

This guide should be read as a chronological step-by-step guide.

Contact DFIM

The insurance company shall contact DFIM by email to dfim@dfim.dk with a request for admission. Admission can only take place once the Danish FSA has registered the insurer's presence in Denmark and its class 10 approval. However, companies are welcome to contact DFIM for guidance on the admission process earlier in the process.

The process - information and documents

Confirmation of membership of DFIM

When all the above-mentioned requirements have been met, all prerequisites for membership are in place, and DFIM will send a confirmation of membership together with the signed membership agreement to the insurance company. At the same time, the membership is registered at DFIM's website and with the COB, to the extent relevant.

Updated information

Please remember keeping DFIM informed of any changes in the registered information. This applies to:

  • Name of the company or branch

  • Address

  • Acquisitions, mergers, demergers, stock transfers, etc.

  • Contact details

  • Termination of existing claims handlers or new claims handlers

  • Termination of existing claims representatives or new claims representatives

DFIM will update the information on DFIM's website and ensure that the Danish Motor Agency and the COB are informed.
